Today was a classic zero mile day. The plan changed from hitting the trail late afternoon to no miles because the weather was cloudy, cold and a high wind warning continued in effect for the Tehachapi Mountains. Heinz drove Nitro, Nightingale, Bono, Doodlebug and me to Bakersfield, CA about an hour drive from Tehachapi. We shopped at a sports store where Nitro replaced her worn out shoes and shorts. From there we visited a large mall where our task was to find some replacement socks for Happy, back in Tehachapi. We searched the mall and the gals did some shopping and we all ended up in the food court, even though we had eaten breakfast just a couple of hours prior at the golf course at Woodward.
From there we drove to a sports superstore to find Happy’s socks. After success there, Heinz drove us back to Woodward where we checked out and stuffed all six of us AND our backpacks into his car. We drove toTehachapi where we checked into the Best Western Hotel, getting a room next to Phantom, Whoop Ass, Badmoon and Happy and two doors down from Laura, Brian, Nabor J and Chowda. Those four hikers have been in town multiple days with some nasty stomach flu that several hikers have contracted, complete with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Heinz had to get Bono and Nightingale to the PO in Mojave, so Squirrel became our trail angel with a car for the evening. He and Doodlebug and Nitro and I split the room for the night. Squirrel, Bad Moon, Happy, Phantom, Whoop Ass and I went to Jake's Steakhouse for dinner, my second night there in a row. I was packed and ready to return to the trail, thanks to Squirrel’s efforts getting us to the grocery store and to the post office.
